A manuscript can read fluently and still lose a reviewer at the point where kWh becomes kW, where a subscript slips in an equation, or where the efficiency quoted in the abstract does not match the one in Table 3. Consistency is the easy part to automate and the wrong part to trust blindly. A subject editor who works in your field checks every symbol, number, table and figure caption, sees exactly what changed between versions, and spends their time on judgement instead of hunting. A named editor signs the file off before it reaches you.

If your paper is not in English yet
