English editing service: honors theses, masters theses, and doctoral dissertations

Uni-edit provides a reliable, quality English editing service to students and researchers at universities in Australia who are writing their honors thesis, masters thesis or doctoral dissertation in English.

A native speaker of English from a Western country (eg. USA, UK, Australia) who has studied in your field of research will remove errors, improve the English, and provide valuable comments to help clarify your meaning and expression.

At Uni-edit, we of course correct punctuation and grammar, and further, our goal is to improve your manuscript to the point that your intended meaning is expressed clearly for the purposes of your supervisors, panel reviewers and other readers.

Who are Uni-edit clients?

Professors, researchers, academics and scientists from all over the world use Uni-edit to improve the English language and clarity of their manuscripts. We work with students and researchers who are based at home and overseas.

Uni-edit works with faculty from many major universities. We are proud to have gained the respect of top universities and research institutes such as Australian National University, University of Queensland, TsingHua University, Tokyo University, Seoul National University, and National Taiwan University.

In many cases, Uni-edit clients have made use of Uni-edit over many years, starting with an overseas university application, followed by a thesis, then by conference papers and journal papers, as they advance through their academic career.

High-quality academic English

Writing clearly and accurately in English to a high professional standard, while being attentive to sometimes obscure subtleties of meaning, is challenging for non-native speakers. Each Uni-edit editor has an academic, scientific or research background; this ensures that your edited manuscript follows the conventions of modern academic or scientific English writing that are likely to be required by your university and expected by external assessors.

Specialist English editors

Uni-edit editors are native speakers of English.  You can choose to have your manuscript edited by a subject-specialist editor in your field of research or by a linguist who has very strong expertise in academic writing and editing.

Option A: English editor who is a subject-matter specialist: Request a subject-matter specialist editor if you feel that your writing does not yet express your intended meaning clearly enough. The subject-matter specialist English editor will understand your research field and will be able to accurately interpret the language of that discipline, such as technical terms and descriptions of ideas and concepts. For example, if your thesis is about the banking industry, the specialist editor will have a background in banking and finance and will understand the relevant concepts and terminology.
Uni-edit has a team of editors covering all fields of study. These include engineering, business, economics, medicine, science, information technology, humanities and social sciences, and other fields.

Option B: English editor with linguistics expertise: Alternatively, you may request an expert who has very advanced academic English writing skills. Authors who feel their meaning is already clearly expressed in the manuscript but want the English polished to a high degree, choose this option. The editor with linguistics expertise will have a background in English literature, linguistics or teaching English.

Uni-edit’s team of English editors enjoy their work, not only because of the pleasure of helping others to produce good quality manuscripts, but also because they are making some contribution to the knowledge economy: to a body of research that is shared worldwide.

You may request to see the profile of the English editor who would be responsible for your manuscript. In that way you can feel confident that a suitably qualified person is taking care of your research.

Depth of English editing: choose light or medium

We offer two different depths of editing for your thesis or dissertation: light or medium. You may choose one, and the editing fee is the same.

Light editing: less editorial changes and faster turnaround
In light English editing, we focus on punctuation, spelling, grammar, basic conjunctions and phrasing. Choose light editing if the English in your manuscript is already in good shape, if you just require the English touched up, or if you need the work completed very urgently. This ensures that you will only have to consider the minimum editorial changes.

Medium editing: deeper improvements
In medium English editing, the editor will perform similar work as for light editing, while the focus is on sentence structure and checking the manuscript for consistent use of terminology and other features. Choose medium editing if your supervisor or reviewer has specifically said the English needs improvement or if you feel much of the text is unclear, due to language problems.

Journal-quality editing service

If you are preparing part of your thesis as a paper for submission to a journal, you should use the journal editing service. Also, if you wish to have an even higher quality English edit of your thesis or dissertation, please choose the journal-quality English editing service , in which two different native speakers of English will edit your manuscript. Please click here.

Even if you are not publishing your manuscript in a journal but still wish for your thesis or dissertation to achieve a higher level of English fluency and naturalness, you may choose the two-editor journal-quality editing service . Please ask us for a quotation for both the single-editor and the two-editor services, and then you can consider which is more suitable for your needs.

Turnaround times and urgent service

Standard speed service
Uni-edit understands that you may be working to tight deadlines. With the quotation, we will set a deadline and promise to finish on or before that deadline. A thesis typically takes from 14 days: the turnaround time will be negotiated and agreed to before commencement. For a long thesis or dissertation, it is suggested that you enquire well in advance, to ensure availability of a suitable editor and timely completion.

Urgent service
An urgent service is available. A masters thesis can often be edited in around 3 to 7 days. A lengthy dissertation can be completed in 10 to 21 days. When you choose the urgent service, we will prioritize your manuscript. Additional fees apply for this service.

Staged delivery
Generally we will edit your entire manuscript and then send it back to you. However, you may like us to deliver to you in stages, eg. a few chapters at a time. This can give you more time to review our editing work and make further revisions. If this staged delivery is requested, you will need to reassemble your entire manuscript once each part is finalized. We are able to assist with this process, if required. An additional administration fee may apply for staged delivery.

CHECK comment system for clarification

Our editors will work on your manuscript to express ideas and concepts clearly and accurately. Sometimes they will not be completely sure of the intended meaning, or they may find potential ambiguity in the writing. In these instances, the editor will add a CHECK comment, indicate the problem and where possible offer a suggestion how to resolve the problem. CHECK comments are provided in the electronic file using standard word processor functions, and are convenient for you to read and resolve. The CHECK comment system is a kind of dialogue between the author and the editors that allows for clarification of the meaning of delicate or complex parts of the text. This service is included with the editing and no additional fees apply.

Often, you may find one CHECK comment per page, but the frequency varies widely. If you will not have time to review the CHECK comments, then let us know with your order; the editor will insert fewer CHECK comments, and these will be confined only to critical problems.

Tracked changes and final version manuscripts

The editor will use Microsoft Word’s track changes function to perform the editing. This is an easy-to-use function that allows you to easily see each and every change made to your manuscript. Also, we will deliver a finalized version of your manuscript, which is useful for authors who are not familiar with the track changes function in Word. We will be glad to assist you in the use of track changes or other functions of Word, as necessary.

Optional Target TUTOR comments service

The TUTOR comment service is an optional service, where the editor provides additional comments in your manuscript, demonstrating techniques  to improve English usage and writing style. Click here for a sample.

The editor will insert comments on English writing problems specific to your manuscript, explain why the writing is problematic and provide examples or explanations of correct usage. These comments, labeled with the word TUTOR, are like mini English lessons. The purpose of a TUTOR comment is to help you understand why the editor has made a particular edit. This gives you opportunities to develop your English proficiency and to carry these lessons forward, next time you are writing a manuscript. TUTOR comments are categorized: typical categories are grammar, word choice, punctuation, sentence structure, and so on.

Authors who expect to be writing English manuscripts often in their career as an academic, scientist or researcher, and who wish to develop a deeper understanding of the language, will benefit greatly from the TUTOR service.

Optional Content IDEAs comments service

In Uni-edit’s English editing service, the editor focuses on clarity of meaning through correct English usage. Generally, the editor will not point out non-language related problems such as scientific or logical argument, theory, and experimental problems.
If you request the Content IDEAS service, your edited manuscript will also have comments labeled with the word IDEA. The purpose of an IDEA comment is to provide you with fresh insight into the content of your manuscript. When you review Uni-edit’s changes, you can consider each comment in light of the overall purpose of your manuscript, then decide whether you would like to make further changes to the text. Authors who are serious about publishing many manuscripts over the long term find great value in Content IDEAs.

The Content IDEAS service may not be available where Uni-edit feels that contributions would violate a university’s requirements for originality of thesis or dissertation.

Formatting according to university requirements

We recommend that you do your best to become acquainted with and adhere to your university’s formatting guidelines at the time of drafting your manuscript, in order to save valuable time later, when the submission deadline is approaching.

Uni-edit can assist you to prepare your manuscript in accordance with the requirements of your university. This includes document formatting, layout, spacing, font styles, sectioning, page numbering, language style, contents tables, referencing and indexing.
Additional fees will apply for formatting and will be based on the amount of work required.

It is quite common for examiners or reviewers of a manuscript to request some further formatting adjustments before resubmission. Uni-edit will gladly cooperate on subsequent rounds of fixes.

Captions and labeling

Generally the editor will edit table and figure captions. You may request that these not be edited however. Generally the editor will review labels within figures also. Where the label is embedded inside graphics, the editor will insert a CHECK comment explaining any corrections suggested, and you should update the original graphics file accordingly.

Titles, headings and tables of contents

Generally the editor will correct all titles, headings and the tables of contents. Where the manuscript uses automatically generated tables of contents, the editor will update the headings in the main manuscript only.

Referencing and citations

Universities are generally strict about correct referencing and citation, in accordance with their preferred system.
You may choose whether you would like the editor to check that all citations are listed in the references section. You may also request us to ensure that the references adhere to the required style format of your university, such as APA, Harvard, MLA etc. Where a reference entry is incomplete or unclear, the editor will insert a CHECK comment.

Style of English: US, UK, Australian etc.

The Uni-edit team specializes in academic English. The English editor can write using US, UK and Australian styles of English, according to your preferences or the requirements of your university.

Samples of English editing

For new clients, Uni-edit will gladly perform a sample English edit of one or two paragraphs for no charge. Please send us at least one full chapter so that we can properly understand the context. Your manuscript will be treated confidentially.

Follow-up service

Uni-edit will always do its best to produce high quality results. However, in cross-cultural communication, particularly in specialized and often complex subject areas, there is always the possibility of misinterpretation of the intended meaning. Uni-edit's goal is to support you thoroughly throughout the process of completion, so we offer a follow-up service. After you receive the edited manuscript and review it, you may care to send us back the text after you have made any revisions. You can request further attention to a particular passage or passages, and even insert comments to explain the intended meaning in more detail. (Your commentary should be in English).

If your changes are made to clarify the originally intended meaning then there is no extra charge for this follow up service, so long as it is requested within 2 weeks. If your changes are new text for new ideas, concepts or changes to the original manuscript, there will be an additional fee. Please see the section Re-editing service below.

Re-editing service

You may like Uni-edit to edit the manuscript again, or parts of it, after you have revised it. This can happen for example where the research results have been updated or where your supervisor has suggested some revisions. Uni-edit offers two suitable services:

Re-edit option 1: The whole manuscript is edited again at a discounted rate.

Re-edit option 2: Highlight the text you want edited in yellow. You can highlight sentences, paragraphs or whole sections. The editing fee is calculated at the original rate and only applies to the text that will be checked.

Special requirements

Your thesis or dissertation is a once-in-a lifetime endeavor. If you have any special requirements, Uni-edit would like to hear them and we will do our best to help you.

Early preview of English editing work

For new clients, or where a job is particularly important, Uni-edit understands that you may appreciate the opportunity to receive an early sample of the editing work. To ensure you receive the quality you expect we can, within a few days after your order is placed, present to you the editing of a few pages or a single chapter. At times when your schedule to submit is tight, this can allow you to request us to adjust our editing style in advance, by providing any necessary feedback on the editing. For example, you might request lighter or heavier editing, fewer or more CHECK comments, or other specific adjustments, and the editor can alter the editing requirements accordingly.

Guarantee of satisfaction

Uni-edit seeks to build strong relationships with authors based on mutual understanding, and cooperation with the many challenges involved in manuscript preparation.

In the event that you are dissatisfied with any aspect of our editing work, we will rectify any problems, free of charge, so long as this is requested within 2 weeks. If you are not satisfied with the overall editing work, please inform us why (and where in the manuscript) you think the work is unsatisfactory, providing examples, and an appropriate discount from the fee will be negotiated.

Fee for English editing

Uni-edit will provide you with an exact quotation before the work commences. The quotation is free of charge.
The English editing fee is determined by the total number of English words. Each word costs AU$0.04 to AU$0.05 (4 to 5 cents) per word, where we receive your entire manuscript for editing. Additional services may incur additional charges, and these additional charges will be clearly shown in the quotation before you agree to start the work.

Texts about medicine, medical research, pharmaceuticals or legal studies also incur a 20% surcharge.

If you do not require all of the text of your thesis or dissertation to be edited, we can edit just certain parts according to your instructions, and only those parts will be charged for. A surcharge may apply for partial editing of a manuscript.

English editing fee example calculation
Thesis or dissertation total number of words for English editing: 10,000
Cost per word: AU$0.04
Total cost: AU$400

The number of words for editing might be less than the total number of words in your manuscript. For example, you may choose not to have the References section edited. This will reduce the word count and thus the total price.
